With two Olivier Awards and a number one spot in my TOP FIVE SHOWS I’D LIKE TO SEE TOUR post, it’s not secret Dreamgirls was the biggest musical to hit the west end in 2016.
Five star reviews that gush of incredible performances and a banging soundtrack are still coming in thick and fast. I haven’t seen the show yet, so instead I bagged a pre-release copy to binge! Here are three reasons you need it in your life.

1. IT’S FULLY LIVE
That’s right. No part of the Dreamgirls Recording is studio recorded. They filmed over four performances at the Savoy Theatre in February 2017. That makes it’s a true representation of the live show. You can even hear the audience reactions, which transports you to the theatre itself. I can almost picture the sequins and big numbers on stage.
2. IT’S DOUBLE-SIDED
You get to enjoy a full repertoire of 28 sassy and soulful numbers from the Musical. There are no edits so most tracks are around five minutes long, which adds to the authenticity of the recording. The whole thing gives me the chills thanks to a passionate cast that gives out of this world energy levels and vocals. Each track is a stand alone masterpiece.
3. IT’S GOT “THAT” SONG
The final track of CD1 and Act One closing number, And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, is of course the stand out from GLEE star, Amber Riley. It’s a feisty and raw vocal rollercoaster that makes you want to cheer with the live audience on your daily commute. Along with I am Changing and One night Only, Amber really does get chance to showcase her talent.
