I will be forever amazed at how resilient and adaptable the arts have been in response to covid. So whilst IRL theatre has been on pause, digital has dominated, giving us our much needed dose of entertainment.

And Barn Theatre have continued to innovate the online platform with their newest production, ‘The Secret Society of Leading Ladies.’ An interactive concert where you choose the set list.

This show puts you in control as you navigate through a carousel of singers and song choices. But there’s something even more special about the experience. In this world, all your favourite musical characters intertwine.

Princesses, villains and divas from some of the biggest musicals such as Shrek, Mean Girls, Sister Act and Anastasia, are at your command.

How does it actually work?

A selection of 2 or 3 characters will appear on your screen. You then have 45 seconds to make a decision and click your player. Overall, you get to choose 5 characters from the list of 14, personally selecting your own ‘Secret Society’ concert.

There is a simple narrative weaved into the 30 minute gig, which means you get to experience different genres and are always guided onto your next decision. With over 150 combinations, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

So what’s my verdict?

I enjoyed the speakeasy style setting. The minimalist space with studio spotlights on stage really pulled the character into focus. It was intimate, atmospheric and felt like it was just for me.

The video and sound quality was totally top notch and really elevated the whole production. There’s nothing I hate more than sketchy streams and this is crystal clear!

If they were to develop this idea further, and this might be greedy to say, I would want even more women in this society. Can I have 1000+ combinations please? I could have watched for hours.

And who should you look out for?

There are quite a few famous names and faces in this society but I wanted to highlight my top two picks, who genuinely blew me away.

Kayleigh McKnight was the perfect Regina George and absolutely bossed the Mean Girls showstopper, ‘Burn’. And Emma Kingston gave an utterly stunning rendition of ‘Dying ain’t so bad’ from Bonnie and Clyde.

This show is perfect for fellow control freaks and musical addicts but also serves as a fun introduction to the genre.

The Secret Society of Leading Ladies runs from 22 February – 7 March.
