You may well be familiar with the iconic film of the same name? The one with dance sensation Gene Kelly? That unforgettable moment where he jumps on a lamppost and splashes about in the water? The glorious score with hits such as ‘Good Morning’ and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’? Well, this musical is a stage recreation that respects all of that original material.

The age of the talkies
It’s a simple and innocent story that entwines romance and comedy perfectly. It’s the 1920s and silent films are starting to become old news. Something called ‘Talkies’ are on the rise but one production company is struggling to keep up.
Movie superstars Don and Lina decide to remake their newest film into a musical. But is that as easy as it sounds with this newfound technology and leading actors who may not have the talent or indeed friendship to pull it off?
A dance sensation
Now, the first thing I must mention is that the choreography is simply spectacular. From thrilling tap to dreamy ballroom and cheeky vaudeville to big group dance numbers, you’re swept away into this golden age of movies. Where dancing really was the main attraction.
And the scene we were all waiting for? Singing in the Rain of course. With a lamp post, umbrella and torrential rain pouring onto the stage, it really is a wow moment the emulates the film. They recycle over 14,000 litres of water on stage every night!
Leading the show
Adam Cooper had the biggest shoes to fill taking on the legend that is Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood. I really enjoyed his suave and kind performance. His Royal Ballet School training served him well as he effortlessly danced around stage.
Cosmo, Don’s best mate, is a cheeky chappy that gets all the laughs in the film and evidently this stage musical. Ross McLaren has made the role totally his own. I couldn’t stop watching him! ‘Make em laugh’ was a real treat and show of true talent.
Lina Lamont, Don’s co-star and default villain, has an irritating voice and even worse vocal skill. Jenny Gayner played up perfectly to this entitled and bratty character. You love to hate her.
And Charlotte Gooch gave a sweet, shy but strong-willed leading lady as Kathy Selden, Don’s love interest and Lina’s enemy! Her voice is classically beautiful.
Singing in the Rain is a delightful musical that honours the movie you know and love and evokes that old Hollywood glamour. Even on a rainy day this show will put a smile on your face.
Playing at Opera House in Manchester until Saturday 14 May.
On tour following that in Bristol, Liverpool, Wimbledon and Glasgow.
