The musical is fuelled by friendship
Rachel is a 40 odd year-old woman who’s lost contact with her high school friends. We get a throwback to their teen years where this motley crew of excitable girls are obsessed with their favourite band.
Her closest mate, Debbie, and most effervescent of the lot, wins a competition to see The Band in concert. Soon they’re sneaking off in the night to have the time of their lives. But it turns out to be life changing for completely different reasons.
Fast forward 25 years later and history repeats itself, as Rachel wins a competition to see the reunion tour. She reaches out to her long-lost friends and we see how their hopes and dreams panned out, and ultimately watch them reconnect.
Fun to watch unfold
Without a doubt, Greatest Days is both utterly joyous and horribly heart-breaking all at the same time. They navigate the light heartedness of this musical perfectly alongside the sensitivities. It’s actually quite beautiful to see unfold. The power of friendship is extraordinary and this show proves it.
Casting Kym Marsh and her daughter Emilie Cunliffe was a stroke of genius. They embody each other. It’s gorgeous to see them interact on stage as the current and past Rachel.
The teens bring such life and energy whenever they’re on stage. Young Claire, Mari McGinlay, had some particularly banging one liners. Their adult versions are just as fantastic. The acting from them all was believable, pacey and overall funny AF.
And a special mention – everybody loved Jeff, Rachel’s partner. Played by Christopher D Hunt, he was so cheery and endearing.
But how are Take That involved?
Well, this is not a tribute act, so please don’t buy tickets if that’s what you’re wanting. This is a jukebox musical where Take That songs are used to evoke the emotion of that moment, including ‘Back for Good’, ‘A Million Love Songs’ and ‘Shine’.
The band consist of 5 young heart throbs. Styled in 90s outfits, think baggy jeans and long coats, with all the cheesy choreography to match. They act as a Greek Chorus, entering with musical interludes.
Ok, it does feel forced at times. The singing and set isn’t the most impressive. But my god is it fun!!! Drink in the camp, it’s happiness personified.
Greatest Days is unapologetically entertaining. Fans of Take That will love hearing their favourite tracks and anyone who’s up for a fun night out with their friends should book now!
