Bookshops are dying.

Booksellers are struggling. Libraries are almost extinct. The physical touch of paper is becoming a distant memory.

I’m guilty of contributing to this decline. I can’t deny I love my Kindle, which reignited my passion for reading. It’s easy to purchase books, super cheap and doesn’t take up room in my flat.

But we all know why Amazon are the villain. They’re a company that make it impossible for small businesses to compete. Oh, they’re also infamous for treating their employees terribly and tax dodging so, ya know, not great.

Last year I decided to start buying more ethically and that included where I bought books online. Enter Bookshop.org.

They want to keep local bookshops alive.

It’s simple. Bookshop.org are an online bookstore. Difference is, they support independent book shops.

To do this, they’ve created an easy way to buy your fave books online whilst financially supporting book shops all at the same time. Perfect right!

• A bookstore creates their own ‘store front’ where they can put virtual recommendations to browse.
• You can choose a specific store to receive the full profit from your order. Otherwise, it will be added to a pool and evenly distributed.
• The website experience is gorgeous and simple. It’s joyful to navigate and has most book titles.

They’re rivalling Amazon and revolutionising bookselling for the better. To know I’ve contributed to keeping an indie bookshop alive just by using bookshop.org is such a special feeling.

But I’m no saint.

Don’t get me wrong. I still purchase digital books from Amazon. I don’t have storage space for the physical thing and some months I need the savings. I’m not embarrassed to admit that.

But, I have transformed my online spending habits in other ways. I mostly go through independent businesses and mainly buy second-hand clothing, as I know the devasting impacts fast fashion has on the environment.
