Newsies the Musical

I had never heard of Newsies the Musical before watching Sam4God’s YouTube video. Sam attended a private Disney screening before the UK cinema release and has already seen it on Broadway. Lucky girl. So of course following her glowing review I booked tickets to my local cinema.

The Newsies

Newsies is a Disney Production, which actually began life as a film in 1992 starring Christian Bale aka. Batman. Fast forward nineteen years and a Musical adaptation has its World Premier in New Jersey. It loosely follows the true story of the New York City newsboy strike of 1899. After a hike in ‘paps’ prices, Jack, a young ‘newsie’, bravely starts a Union in a bid to fight back against the New York World.

Broadway baby

With such a great response from audiences and critics alike it earned a Broadway run from 2012-2014 and a North American tour until 2016. But what I struggle to understand is why it closed on Broadway? It has all the hallmarks of the perfect musical. An incredible score, fantastic choreography and an endearing most certainly relatable story. I believe it is up there with some of the top brass shows that have been around for decades.

The best of the best

And it’s no coincidence that Newsies the Musical earned eight Tony Award nominations. I am ecstatic to see it won a Tony for Best Choreography and Best Original Score.

The choreography in particular is the best I think I’ve ever seen.  Impressive acrobatics combined with stylised routines linked the show together. It was energetic, powerful and cheeky. How they are not exhausted after the first ten minutes I do not know!

The score is catchy with the right mix of fun ensemble numbers to romantics duets and emotional solos. It’s like a box of celebrations, there is a vast selection and they are all tasty. No duds in this show. I am downloading the soundtrack as I type.

Killer Cast

It was nice to see this broadcast brought back some of the original cast members and introduced fresh new faces. The ensemble had more impact than ever before as this special LA Broadcast brought together performers from all the earlier productions.

Kara Lindsay who played Katherine Plumber is a strong independent woman. She’s not afraid to respond to the immature boys quips with her own ‘sarcy’ remarks. Although it was SO hard not to hear her voice as Galinda from Wicked. It is just so recognisable to my ears now…

Jeremy Jordan played Jack with perfection. He’s a good boy stuck in a bad situation. Life has dealt him a bad hand. He was rough around the edges with a lot of cheek but also a loving and caring charm. A triple threat that would make most knees tremble.

Fansies

Newsies the Musical floored me. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. So, I would like to enrol myself as an official member of the ‘fansies’ club. And I only hope this broadcast sparks a rally to get this back on Broadway or into the West End. We should follow in the footsteps of Jack and stand up for what we believe in. Let’s seize the day!
